An exciting day at Enniskillen Workhouse

17th Oct 2024

Today, our amazing P5-7 children had an unforgettable trip to Enniskillen Workhouse, as the start of their topic on the Famine in Ireland. They kicked off the day with a very informative lesson on the events leading up to the Famine in Ireland, the Famine in Ireland and the events after the Famine. The children were very inquisitive historians answering all the why questions Catherine was asking them.

After the lesson they got the opportunity to visit the renovated part of the Workhouse and hear some of the sad stories of both young and old children dying in the workhouse. They also got to see some unusual artefacts from the workhouse.

Finally, the children visited the Paupers’ grave in whiich it is not quite known how many people are buried here and not a headstone in sight.

A huge thank you to Enniskillen Museum in particular, Catherine Scott for her very engaging and informative sessions. We would also like to thank FODC for funding this educational visit for the children. There is a wealth of our heritage to discover on our very own doorstep.
